Solar Stratified Tanks

Stratified Tanks

Hot water tends to rise while cold water sinks. The innovative Pro-Clean spherical exchanger uses this gravitational principle of physics. Unlike most solar tanks where the solar coil is located at the base, the stratified tank generates water of different temperatures in different layers in the tank, thereby providing optimum water temperature in the correct layer depending on consumption. The tank therefore heats from top to bottom. Pro-Clean solar stratified charging enables the solar energy obtained to be utilised much sooner than in traditional tank systems.

What Exactly Happens In A Tank?

The tank in a solar thermal system generally contains two heat exchangers. The lower one transfers the heat from the solar circuit to the water and the upper one is connected to the boiler and provides any secondary heating required. Because of the different densities of hot and cold water, temperature stratification takes place in the tank. The lighter hot water collects in the upper section of the tank, the heavier cold water in the bottom.

Benefits of Stratified Tanks

  • Large hot water capacity – The corrugated profile of the pipe wall generates strong eddies when water flows through which, together with a large exchanger surface area, significantly increases the hot water capacity.

  • Germ-free hot water and fresh water heating - due to the special corrugated stainless steel pipe, germs are unable to congregate.

  • Legionella-free – Due to the overall volume on the domestic hot water side and regular water replacement, no bacteria such as legionella can collect. Additional heating to prevent legionella build-up is therefore unnecessary allowing the solar system provide even extra energy for hot water. The result is clean safe hot water straight from the tap.

  • No risk of scaling – Due to the special shape and length of the corrugated pipe, it's not possible for scaling to build up.
