insulation

Hopefully you've gathered from our website that we're passionate that you get this one right.  It doesn't matter what system you invest in, it'll be a waste of money if you don't insulate your property to the best of your ability.

Existing Properties

If your property is older, conduct an initial audit yourself - put a checklist together, look at your windows, doors, whether your attic is insulated (beyond a layer of glass fibre matting thrown into your attic sometime in the early 1970s), number of open fires and chimneys, whether there's cavity insulation.  If you're in doubt at this point it may be time to call in the experts - see below.

New Builds

In a new build, you can expect that both building and insulation standards will be up to current building regulations, however, we strongly advise that you keep a close eye on the standard of insulation fitting that's carried out.  You're paying enough money for high insulation levels - ensure it's fitted properly.

Help

IHS has a thermal imaging camera which we hire out on a daily basis.  This camera will immediately identify problem areas in walls and roofs and highlight where there's heat loss.
For information about improving insulation levels in your home, contact the National Insulation Association on http://www.nationalinsulationassociation.org.uk/
which is a trade site with a comprehensive householder section - it also offers innovative solutions to insulation challenges.

Financial Assistance

Check with your local authority.  Many have "Renovation  Grants" and "Small Works Grants".  They tend to be limited and means-tested and may be replaced by low-interest loans.  While not specifically intended for energy efficiency improvements, this may be included as part of overall works.  Eg. if you need to repair a leaking roof, roof insulation could be included.

Some councils have particular energy efficiency programmes which are restricted to particular geographical areas.  Generally they're cash-limited and offered on a first come first serve basis.

Contact the Grants Officer of your local authority to find out what's available.
The other primary source of financial assistance towards upgrading your insulation is from the gas and electric companies.  Schemes are open to all householders and you do not have to be a customer of a particular company or switch companies to apply.
Schemes offer discounts of up to 50% of normal costs.  Schemes vary considerably and you should obtain several quotes in order to obtain the best deal.

Some Facts

Insulation is a means of increasing the thermal efficiency of a wall, floor or roof.  The capability to retain heat is called thermal efficiency and it's measured in U-values.  The lower the U-value, the more heat you retain.  The effect of tightening U-values on energy efficiency is dramatic.  A centrally heated house built in the early 1970s with no insulation consumed five times more fuel than its equivalent built in 2004.  Typical space heating demand has fallen from 250kWh (kilowatt hours per square metre, per annum to about 50kWh (per square metre per annum).  Adding more quality insulation will reduce this heat load demand even further.
