pipe installation options (ground source heat pumps)

All ground source heat pumps have two parts; a circuit of underground piping outside the house and a heat pump unit inside the house.  The outdoor piping system can be either an open or closed loop system.
An open system takes advantage of the heat retained in an underground body of water.  In a closed-loop sstem, heat is collected from the ground by means of a continuous loop of piping buried underground.
Here are the primary pipe installation methods:

Horizontal installation of pipe into trenches  (closed loop).  This is the most common method and is far cheaper than drilling.  Click here for information.

Vertical installation of pipe into borehole (closed loop).  Sealed pipe circuit drilled into the rock where there's a lack of space or ground is unsuitable for trenches.  Click here for more information.

Vertical installation - open well.  We have designed a variety of systems which can extract heat from domestic wells, the sea, ponds, lakes, rivers, burns.  If you've got a plentiful source of water near your home, let us know and we'll advise whether it's worth your while pursuing using your resources as a heat source.
